Hawking's solution was to say that the universe must have had neither beginning nor end, when time is measured as "imaginary" time - a technique known to be valid in the sum over histories approach. From this radical assumption, Hawking showed that the most probable universes were expanding universes like our own, with its same remarkable degree of uniformity which had long evaded explanation.
